Professor John Ackers is a very distinguished academic from
the London School of Hygiene and Tropical
Medicine (LSHTM) at the University of London. He has been
involved in teaching and learning for 27 years, primarily
postgraduate coursework teaching in infectious diseases. Until
his retirement at the end of 2006 Professor Ackers was Professor
of Postgraduate Education in Public Health, Coordinator of the
Distance Learning programme at the LSHTM for 2000 and 2001 and
Deputy Chair of the University of London’s External System
Academic Board. He was involved in the initiation of Distance
Learning and developed the Distance Learning Programme from a low
base in 2000 to a peak of 1900 students in 120 countries during
his tenure as Coordinator. He has been an external assessor in
reviews of the teaching programmes of the Liverpool School of
Tropical Medicine and the Imperial College Faculty of Medicine
and has reviewed a new Distance Learning course for the Royal
Veterinary College in London. He continues as an active
postgraduate teacher.
