Guidelines to enable Faculties at UWA to Develop an Online Teaching and Learning Plan

The following guidelines have been developed to assist Faculties that want to develop an online teaching and learning plan.

Introduction

UWA has articulated a vision of itself as a "high touch, high tech" university that aims to provide a rich learning environment for its students. As the University continues to seek ways to enrich the students' learning environment, online teaching and learning resources are being developed to supplement the on-campus learning experience that is so highly valued by the University for its students.

Currently UWA has a highly devolved model of online teaching and learning resources development. These guidelines seek to assist Faculties and schools plan for the development of such resources to enrich their students' learning experience.

In developing an online teaching and learning plan, each Faculty will need to consider the following:-

  • its strategic objectives for online teaching and learning
  • where it is now in relation to these objectives, and
  • how it will achieve these objectives.

The Faculty will also need to consider the benefits and the costs of implementing its online teaching and learning plan.

What is online learning?

Online learning is defined, from a UWA perspective, in 'Towards a definition of online learning'. This definition was endorsed at the Teaching and Learning Committee meeting (15 August, 2001) and forwarded to the Academic Council for consideration and approval.
