Almost all teaching award recipients recognise concern for students as the key to what sees them acknowledged as a good teacher.

·         In Chapter 6 of Reflecting on University Teaching Academic's Stories  (Ballantyne, Bain, & Packer, 1997), Christine Yap talks about her strategies for helping overseas students participate in class discussions and to understand the fundamental concepts of their subjects.

·         In Chapter 22 of Teaching Tips (McKeachie, 1994) Nancy Chism gives a useful review of the issue of social diversity among higher education students, its impact on teaching and learning and some suggestions for teachers.

·         Zita McLure’s Case in Teaching Matters: Tutorials (Centre for Learning and Teaching, 1992) gives a range of techniques for developing effective relationships with students.
