Examples or illustrations can be used to get the students' attention, aid retention and provide interest and variety to the presentation. They can also be used to put the content into context and to make links to real life situations.

·         Davis, Wood & Wilson (1983) present suggestions concerning the use of concrete or memorable examples as an aid to learning.

·         The Large Classes Newsletter (Carbone, 1996) suggests that by "incorporating demonstrations and dramatic devices into the lecture format, we can help increase student attention, interest, understanding and learning".

·         Some key steps in effective demonstration are given in the Teaching techniques for adult learning (hydi Educational New Media Centre, 1996).
