Students are often unclear as to how to improve their performance. They need specific advice on how to learn more effectively and retain what they learn.

·         Twenty three very briefly outlined strategies for helping students to learn effectively are provided on pp.75-83 of Two hundred and fifty-three Ideas for Your Teaching. (Gibbs & Habeshaw, 1990).

·         'Developing Student Learning Skills', Chap.5 Tutoring at University: A Beginner's Practical Guide. (Bertola & Murphy, 1994), provides useful advice for tutors, most of which is equally applicable in other teaching situations.
