Students' Unit Reflective Feedback (SURF)

Students’ Unit Reflective Feedback (SURF) is an instrument developed in UWA to provide university wide feedback on students’ educational experiences and to encourage systemic responsiveness to this feedback. It is a short, standard questionnaire that

  • relates only to the unit and does not seek feedback on an individual’s teaching,
  • is designed to be administered towards the end of the unit,
  • is used in all units in the university, except those with special circumstances.

Students are requested to provide feedback on the following statements:

  1. It was clear what I was expected to learn in this unit.
  2. The assessment requirements were clearly stated.
  3. The assessment tasks were closely linked to the unit objectives.
  4. The unit was well organised.
  5. The learning resources (handouts, text, web resources, etc) were adequate for my study in the unit.
  6. Overall, this unit was a good educational experience.

Academic staff do not need to order a SURF questionnaire. The Institutional Research Unit (IRU) will send questionnaires to schools and faculties for distribution, and will also process the completed questionnaires and communicate the survey results.

Communication of SURF survey results within a faculty is as shown below.

SURF is not intended as a replacement for Student Perceptions of Teaching (SPOT) which allows you to collect more detailed feedback.
