Diversity, resilience and successful progression

Project Description:

The findings of this project undertaken by a research team from Edith Cowan University has relevance for anyone currently teaching in Higher Education in Australia.

Prior to this study there was little published data on students in the latter years of their learning journey, and perhaps more importantly, a lack of information based on the students' own voices in describing that journey.

The study has revealed insights into:

  • the factors that contribute to students' persistence and resilience in their studies
  • the kinds of learning experiences that contribute to students' success and to their transition into the workplace
  • how we might improve the learning environment to enhance engagement and retention.

Student diversity, and how we might cater for this in practice was a focus of the research for the ALTC. Yet, with some qualifications, the students' narratives show that there are far more commonalities than differences in the factors underlying the diverse and successful student journeys.

Workshop Description:

This session will be conducted by members of the ALTC-funded Student Resilience and Diversity project from Edith Cowan University who will share results of this longitudinal study to date. This presentation is planned to be interactive. There will be the opportunity to learn how the findings resonate with your own experiences and have the potential for improving practice.
