Supervising International Students

Intended Audience:

Staff who are relatively new to supervising international students or staff with international student supervision experience who want to reflect upon, develop and refresh their current conceptions and practice of supervision.

Workshop Description:

  • The roles and responsibilities of the supervisor;
  • The supervisor/student relationship;
  • Best practice in international student supervision.

Intended Outcomes:

These workshops aim to assist participants:

  • In developing a clear understanding of their role and responsibilities as a supervisor, and what they can expect of international students;
  • To develop productive working relationships with their international students, to identify the key qualities of a good supervisor, and to discuss practical suggestions on how to handle the difficulties that can arise in the supervisor/student relationship;
  • To explore departmental and other support initiatives for both the supervisor and student;
  • To identify support structures and useful strategies in relation to international students;
  • To increase their awareness of a range of approaches to international student supervision and of the specific contributions a supervisor can make.

Key Activities:

  • Active learning exercises;
  • Group discussion;
  • Case studies;
  • Self-reflective exercises;
  • Discussion with experienced supervisors;
  • Specialist guest speakers.
