Team Based Learning: A workshop by Professor Larry Michaelsen
Intended Audience:Teaching staff with an interest in group work and team based learning techniques. Description:As part of Teaching and Learning Month 2009, the Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) and the UWA Business School are pleased to host Professor Larry Michaelsen. Larry K. Michaelsen is Professor of Management at Central Missouri State University and is David Ross Boyd Professor Emeritus at the University of Oklahoma, a Carnegie Scholar, a Fulbright Senior Scholar and former Editor of the Journal of Management Education. Team Based Learning: An In-Class Strategy for Going Beyond Covering ContentTeam-based learning (TBL) refocusses a lecture from the lecturer conveying concepts to student groups' application of key concepts. As classes become larger, more diverse and face-to-face time more limited, the need for active learning becomes stronger. Team-based learning increases individual and group engagement in class and encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning. Intended Outcomes:This workshop will: - Familiarise participants with a team-based format for in-class learning which has consistently resulted in high performance, attendance and student satisfaction in a wide range of content areas and class sizes of 150+ students without significantly increasing staff workloads
- Demonstrate a process that academics can use to assure student readiness to develop student's higher level thinking and problem solving skills more efficiently
- Explore additional issues and concerns about incorporating group work into your units
- Hear a "warts and all" account of the impact on student learning and teaching practices from colleagues who have incorprated TBL into their units in the Faculty
