Introduction

Alan RobsonI am most pleased to be launching both this newsletter and the Teaching and Learning Centre. The newsletter will provide a mechanism for the dissemination and discussion of a range of issues to do with teaching and learning in the University. It will provide brief information on processes and structures for ensuring quality in teaching and learning across the campus, as well as highlighting current trends. Issues of Teaching and Learning will complement Learning Innovation, the existing newsletter of the Innovative Teaching Forum.

The launch of the Teaching and Learning Centre, as a Quality funded initiative, provides all staff of the University with a purpose-designed facility for the support of self-directed development activities. This unique Centre offers staff considerable flexibility in the choice of time, frequency and duration of development activities, as well as control over the pace and focus of their development.

Although the Teaching and Learning Centre is physically located in the Centre for Staff Development, a range of the resource material is also being made available electronically.

The Centre for Staff Development's collection of book, audio and video resources are now located in the Teaching and Learning Centre and are available for borrowing. These are supplemented by handout material from CSD courses available on file for easy access by users of the facility.

Macintosh and IBM computer access make it possible for individuals to extend their skills with common computer software and specific task support is available as required. Facilities for creating and projecting computer generated overhead projector transparencies allow exploration of this aid to teaching and other presentations. Assistance with access to internet resources is also available to allow familiarity with the possibilities of using the World Wide Web for teaching and learning as well as research.

There is ample workspace and a quiet reflective environment, supported by assistance, when required, from staff of the Centre for Staff Development.

The Centre will initially be open from 8.30 am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. I would urge staff to drop in and see what the Centre has to offer. This facility certainly provides a useful complement to the more structured programmes of the Centre for Staff Development.

Professor Alan Robson

Deputy Vice-Chancellor
