Higher Education: Blending Tradition and Technology

Over 200 university teachers, academic staff developers, study skills advisers, higher education researchers and policy makers attended this year's Herdsa Conference in Rockhampton. Delegates came from all parts of Australia and New Zealand, and from as far as South Africa and Hong Kong. The main focus of the conference was on issues of teaching and learning in higher education, examined from research, practitioner and staff development perspectives. Over 100 sessions were run on topics such as teaching and learning, computer-based education, multimedia educational technology, assessment, evaluation, writing, and quality issues. The conference preceedings (Research and Development in Higher Education, Vol 18) are available on disc in either Macintosh or IBM format from the Teaching and Learning Centre.

Next year's HERDSA conference will be hosted by the Western Australian Branch of HERDSA and will be held at the University of Western Australia from 8th - 12th July. The theme of the conference will be Different Approaches: Theory and Practice in Higher Education. The conference will provide the opportunity to explore a diversity of perspectives and processes in the theory and practice of higher education. The programme structure will facilitate group interaction, discussion in areas of specific interest, and in-depth examination of key issues.
