Review: Effective Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
Effective Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (1992) was developed for the Committe of Vice-Chancellors and Principals in the U.K., "to provide information and support to colleagues in higher education who are interested in reviewing their ways of teaching and encouraging students to learning more effectively." The modules include:
- What is active learning?
- Course design for active learning.
- Planning teaching for active learning.
- Active learning in large classes and with increasing student numbers.
- Enabling active learning in small groups.
- Active learning in practical classes.
- Active learning in field work and project work.
- Learning actively on one's own.
- Essay writing for active learning.
- Promoting the development of personal and professional skills.
- Assessing active learning.
- Evaluating teaching and courses from an active learning perspective.
These self-access study materials form an excellent resource for departmental or faculty based discussions on promoting more active learning thoughout the curriculum.
