Development Needs of Academic Staff

The recent Mann Report, The Development Needs of Academic Staff at Lecturer Level B and Below, suggests that the following are some of the issues that staff may experience in relation to teaching:

  • the negative effects of high teaching loads;
  • a tension between teaching and research which may affect either adversely;
  • the heavy load associated with teaching to many new course;
  • the dissipation of energy and effort throught the teaching of too many diverse classes;
  • a lack of departmental teaching meetings;
  • and the constraints of the lecture format on alternative ways of teaching.
