Teaching-Research Nexus

Higher education instruction at the end of the 19th century was a mixed bag of the good and the bad. Sewall (1889) recognised that academics may not practice sound pedagogy.

But college professors are not always good teachers. They are often masters of particular departments of knowledge who are not masters of instruction. They can acquire but not impart. They can work themselves, but they can neither make others work, except by example, nor show them how to work. (pp. 96-97)
