Unit Coordinator - is that an administrative function or a teaching function?
One of the least written about roles in universities is that of the Unit Coordinator. the role is quite common in most Australian universities and could be assumed to be pivotal in determining the effective provision of a quality learning environment for students. However, apart from some internal guidelines (though these are rare) and incidental references to unit co-ordinators in unit outlines, there is no generic synthesis of the role and expectations that might be held of people carry such responsibilities.
Is unit co-ordination an administrative function? Is it a teaching function? Does the role require special skills If so, how might these skills be acquired?
Should the role be recognized and rewarded? If not., why not? What are the consequences of not recognizing and rewarding the role?
