Multiple perspectives of assessment
 Assessment
provides us with information about student learning. We use this
information for a variety of purposes, not the least of which is
to inform the student of his or her progress in the unit and to
assign a grade. We should also use assessment of student learning
to inform our own teaching practice and make changes to that
practice to facilitate better student learning. As with many
aspects of education, there is no one approach in assessment that
will be appropriate for all purposes or for all disciplines. We
have discussed some issues related to assessment in the past. In
this edition of Issues of Teaching and Learning we provide
further perspectives on assessment which we hope will add to your
continuing debate and discussion about this core element of
teaching and learning.
