Issues of Teaching and Learning, 12(3)

Education after the first degree

The main focus of this edition is graduate (or postgraduate) education, in particular the path towards a doctoral degree and the likely influences on that journey. Among the issues touched upon are: the origins of graduate education traditions, disciplinary differences in doing a PhD, developing a professional identity, reaching beyond research in a PhD, and achieving a doctoral degree through coursework.

What's Inside ITL

Origins of (post)graduate education
The PhD … more than a research process?
Disciplinary divide in doing a PhD - Then and now
The place of professional doctorates in Australian Universities
Some issues in developing a professional identity

The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) invites reader response to its publication ITL. Responses advancing the scholarly debate of issues raised will be published in the Web version of that issue.
