Teaching and Learning Month 2012 will be held at UWA from Monday 7 to Friday 18 May 2012. The theme for this year is "Experiencing New Courses".
Teaching and Learning Month is all about discovering, discussing, pursuing, celebrating and valuing excellence in teaching and learning. From showcasing innovative approaches and methods to focusing on the finer points of tested-by-time pedagogical tools, Teaching and Learning Month encourages UWA staff and students to get thinking about and, most importantly, get talking about teaching and learning issues, ideas and practices and the student learning experience.
Teaching and Learning Month 2012 will focus on the theme of ‘Experiencing New Courses’, giving staff and students the opportunity to reflect on their experience in the first few months of New Courses – perhaps thinking about how the new undergraduate degree structure has changed first-year teaching, how transition is working, what the effect is on staff teaching practices, and whether the first-year experience has been enhanced.
A series of events around this theme has been scheduled for Teaching and Learning Month and is outlined below and available on our Program.
The 2012 UWA Teaching Awards Ceremony is planned for Wednesday 9 May, 6:00 – 8:30pm, University Club Banquet Hall (including a cocktail reception).
All members of the University community are invited to attend the ceremony, which recognises the University’s achievements in teaching and learning and rewards our outstanding teachers and teaching support staff. The 2012 Vice Chancellor's invitational speech will be presented by Mrs Kerry Sanderson AO.
The ceremony includes the University-wide announcement of faculty teaching award winners, the announcement of the University Excellence in Teaching Awards and the University’s nominees for national teaching awards. The ceremony also includes the annual Vice-Chancellors Invitational Lecture.

Public Forum, Monday 7 May 2012, 3:00 - 4:00pm, University Club Seminar Room 1 (followed by afternoon tea)
The "Hunters & Gatherers: Strategies for Curriculum Mapping and Data Collection for Assurance of Learning" project concentrates on two elements of the assurance of learning: Mapping learning objectives that relate to graduate attributes across suitable units of study in the program (where possible allowing for introduction, further development and then assurance of the objectives); and collecting data on student performance in relation to each learning objective.
The emphasis will be on informing strategy in a way that supports efficient and manageable assurance mechanisms for academic staff. These elements will be considered through a sector wide audit. The audit will examine not only the regulatory practice of mapping and data collection but also provide a platform for innovation and change principles.

A get-together for past teaching award winners. Thursday 10 May 2012, 3:00 - 5:00pm, Waterports and Leadership Centre
Facilitated by Michael Wood and Asst/Professor Rashmi Watson, the Creative Conversations will focus around personal experiences with assessment through open space learning forum. Wednesday 16 May 2012 from 12:30 - 3:00pm in Seminar Room 1 at Love House.
The process that will be used for our conversations is called “Open Space Technology”. 'Open Space' is a self-organising process that runs on the energy and commitment of those who attend. There is no predetermined agenda established by others. Nor will there be experts standing at the front giving presentations. Rather, the facilitators will be resources for and to each other. You will be invited to create your own agenda based on what is important to you, and to take responsibility for what emerges. Open Space is a highly self-directive, interactive, dynamic and flexible workshop process which allows you to directly name and address each of your 'burning' questions, issues and ideas.
