Postgraduate Supervision

A critical role within a research-intensive university is effective research supervision. Those new to supervision should attend ‘Supervising Postgraduate Students’, a programme that offers guidance on University expectations, explores the development and maintenance of good supervisor-student relationships and shares departmental best practice for supporting supervisors and students.

fIRST - for Improving Research Supervision and Training

fIRST provides access to a range of resources that help universities and individual supervisors improve the quality of their postgraduate research education.

fIRST was created by a consortium of Australian and New Zealand universities. The aim is to review and share existing supervision development resources and to develop new resources for the benefit of consortium members. As new members join the consortium, they are given password access to the fIRST resources.

fIRST's resources include:

• on-line activities that individuals can use to develop their expertise as postgraduate research student supervisors
• materials and instructions for providing face-to-face staff development workshops
• tools, case studies, a bibliography and links to other relevant web sites.
