Abstract and Paper Guidelines

Abstracts should provide sufficient detail to assist delegates in making their selections.

These guidelines for paper preparation are quite easy to achieve with most software. An example below illustrates the main layout requirements. A Microsoft Word template is also available.

Format requirements for Abstracts

Abstract requirements are:

  • Format: e-mail attachment
  • Word processor: MS Word
  • Document name: Use your last name and first initial of your first name, eg. goodyaTLF2006
  • Style: Use 'normal style' only
  • Margins: 2.5 cms all around
  • Title of session: Times New Roman font, 14 point, bold
  • Three key words relating to the theme of the abstract: 10 point
  • Abstract: Times New Roman font, 10 point (no more than 300 words)
  • Presenter details: Times New Roman font, 12 point, including:
    Name of session presenter/coordinator
    Position and institution
    Contact details (address, telephone, fax, e-mail)
    Other presenter (if relevant)

Format requirements for Publication of Papers

Each paper should have Part A (on a separate sheet), and Part B.

PART A – The cover sheet should include:

Paper title (Times New Roman, 14pt, bold, centred, sentence case
Place two lines after the paper title)
Your name, department and institution (Times New Roman 12 pt, sentence case, centred with principal author listed first)
Contact details for principal author (postal address, telephone & fax number, email address)
Author biography(s) 75 words maximum.

PART B – The paper should include (starting on a separate sheet):

Paper title
An abstract of 250 words (repeated)
Paper no more than 5000 words including references.

Note: Author name(s) should not appear on Part B.

Page size, margins, alignment
A4 page. Margins 2.5 cm all sides.

Spacing
All text single-spaced, left aligned (not justified) unless otherwise specified

Font & size
Times New Roman, 12pt unless otherwise specified

Paper title
14pt, bold, centred, sentence case
Place two lines after the paper title

Abstract
10pt, italics, indented 1 cm both left and right side
Place two blank lines before and after the abstract
The abstract must be no more than 300 words

Normal text
12pt, single-spaced, left aligned (not justified)
Place one line space between paragraphs. Do not indent the first line of each paragraph

Long quotes (roughly, quotes of 30 words or more)
10pt, indented 1 cm left and right

1st level of subheading
12pt, bold, sentence case, left aligned
Leave one line space before and after this level of subheading
Do not number subheadings

2nd level of subheading
12pt, italics, sentence case, left aligned
Leave one line space before and after this level of subheading
Do not number subheadings

Tables and figures
Captions in 12pt, bold, sentence case, centred

Page numbers
Please insert page numbers at the bottom of the page, right aligned
(These will be removed during compilation)

Footnotes
Please avoid using footnotes
If unavoidable, make endnotes at the end of the article

References and citations
Please use the APA citation and reference style. List references under the 1st level subheading, References

Diagrams
Diagrams, illustrations, graphs, etc, must be contained in your Word document, located in correct positions, and must be 'screen readable'. This means fully legible and readable on screen when displayed at widths that ideally do not exceed about 750 pixels and certainly should not exceed 1000 pixels.
